A Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Economics guarantees admission to one or more related Master’s programmes at the Faculty of Economics and Business. These follow-on programmes build directly on your Bachelor’s programme.

Accountancy and Control
If you choose the specialisation Accountancy and Control, you will be eligible for unconditional admission to the 1-year Master's programme in Accountancy and Control. This programme prepares you for a career in accountancy or financial management. It offers a challenging combination of academic training and the application of international financial and reporting standards to complex real-world business cases. You will develop your analytical skills and professional knowledge, and gain up-to-date insights that you can apply in your future career.

Finance
If you choose the specialisation Finance, you will be eligible for unconditional admission to the 1-year Master's programme in Finance. This programme gives you a deep understanding of financial decision-making and financial markets. You will develop a broad range of skills that will prepare you for your future career. You can choose from 6 tracks, allowing you to focus on the area that interests you most.

Business Economics
In this 1-year academic Master’s programme you learn to conduct research in business economics subjects. Choose from 3 tracks: Managerial Economics and Strategy, Sustainability or Neuroeconomics. Both the Economics major and the Business Economics major (with a specialisation in Organisational Economics or Finance) give you access to this programme.

Economics
If you choose the Economics major, you will be eligible for unconditional admission to the 1-year Master's programme in Economics. In this programme, leading experts share their research and insights on how to make the economy future-proof. You can choose from 6 tracks, allowing you to focus on the area that interests you most.

Entrepreneurship (joint degree VU and UvA)
In this Master’s programme, you will learn how to turn opportunities into action. Learning to think and act like an entrepreneur can benefit your career, whether you work as an employee or run your own business. This is a joint degree of VU Amsterdam and the UvA. Both majors of the Bachelor’s in Economics and Business Economics give you direct access to this programme.

As an economist or business economist, you could take a position with employers such as:

- large and small businesses across a wide range of sectors, as a business analyst, strategic consultant, data analyst or portfolio manager, for example
- government ministries, as an economic adviser or policy officer, for example

- preparing for the Dutch labour market.

Internship and exchange
During or after your studies, you can do an internship or go on an exchange abroad. For international students, an internship is a good way to experience the Dutch labour market.

Our students have excellent career prospects. All companies need a good economist to resolve all sorts of economics issues. As an economist or business economist, potential future employers include multinationals, banks, ministries, major businesses and SMEs in various sectors. You could be employed as a financial analyst, stock trader, economics adviser or accountant. Many of our students continue their studies by taking a specialist Master’s programme.

Sefa, the study association for all Faculty of Economics and Business students, organises a number of online and offline career events a year, where you can meet potential future employers. In addition, there are regular guest lectures for you to attend, hosted by businesses and government organisations.

Does AI affect my career prospects after the Bachelor’s in Economics and Business Economics?
It is difficult to predict the long-term effects of new technologies, such as AI, on the labour market. At present, there is no clear effect of the rise of AI on the career prospects of economists and business economists, unlike in some other professions.
The Bachelor’s in Economics and Business Economics prepares you for a changing labour market. In several courses, you learn how to use AI responsibly. This helps you develop a skill that is relevant to your future career.

Is a Master's degree required to start working, or can I also enter the job market with only a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Economics?
Yes, you can start working directly after completing the Bachelor’s in Economics and Business Economics. However, most students choose to continue with a Master’s programme. With your Bachelor’s degree you have unconditional access to several Master’s programmes at UvA Economics and Business, depending on your major, including Accountancy and Control, Business Economics, Economics, Finance and Entrepreneurship. A Master’s allows you to gain advanced knowledge and experience-based learning, which can be valuable as you progress in your career.
