The lab linguistics research group provides a forum for those ACLC linguists and their colleagues to share their expertise and experience in studying language and linguistic processes using laboratory techniques, including behavioral tasks, eye-tracking, and EEG.

Key objectives

  • Establish a database of adult participants for linguistic lab studies
  • Establish a database of child participants for linguistic lab studies
  • Improved quality of research and PhD training, through ongoing internal peer-review of any commencing lab study
  • Improved quality of research and PhD training, through ongoing exchange about design, data acquisition, and analysis of linguistic lab studies
  • Providing opportunities for student internships/placements/rotations that provide insight in more than one sub-discipline of linguistics

Impact

The lab linguistics groups will make linguistics more familiar to the general public by inviting them to participate in lab studies (which provide an opportunity to speak one-on-one to a linguist), organising open days, and displaying linguistic experiments on science fairs.

Events

  • Monthly meetings for presentation of planned laboratory studies, discussion of ongoing laboratory studies, and reporting back on finished studies.
  • The Monthly meetings also provide an opportunity for the lab technician, Dirk Jan Vet, to discuss any lab and equipment issues with all users.
