Sociophonetic Variation and Change (“SocPhon”) studies sociolinguistic variation in speech production and perception from all possible angles. We seek a complete picture of the processes underpinning language variation and change, unifying perspectives as diverse as dialectology, diachronic linguistics, the phonetics-phonology interface, psycho- and neurolinguistics, and experimental and other quantitative methods.

Key objectives

  • Discussing state-of-the-art research relevant to the research group, including the ongoing development of such research by our members.
  • Initiating collaboration among and between the ACLC community and externals (e.g. researchers from the Fryske Akademy) towards the study of language variation and change, particularly in laboratory settings.
  • Shaping the up-and-coming ‘fourth wave’ of laboratory sociolinguistics.

Events

We aim to meet around once a month to discuss our ongoing or prospective research projects or grant applications, interesting research problems that we’ve encountered, and discuss relevant research papers.

Impact

Our research is embedded within the ‘fourth wave’ of sociolinguistics, which uses laboratory and other quantitative methods to understand the processes (cognitive, social, interactional, etc.) that make language variation and change tick. We directly contribute to the development and elaboration of this highly recent (e.g. Van de Velde et al 2021) methodological innovation in the field of sociolinguistics.
