The project explores the idea that frustrativity, as a grammatical category, is not limited to the notion of non-realization of an envisaged outcome (< Latin frustra, ‘in vain’) but encompasses various other types of “non-fulfilment”: of an attempt, the continuation of an event in time, an expectation or the speaker’s wishes.

Key objectives

  • to identify, define and characterize possible sub-categories of frustrativity;
  • to investigate lexical and grammatical expressions of frustrativity sub-categories in a variety of languages;
  • to draw generalizations about the typological distribution and diachronic development of such expressions;
  • to present the results of our work at scientific meetings and organize an international workshop in Amsterdam;
  • to publish a volume collecting the results of the project.

Events

We meet every two weeks, in online or hybrid mode.

Impact

Frustrativity is one of the most recently discovered grammatical categories. As such, it has not yet been the object of much cross-linguistic research. The core idea of the project is that, like other macro-categories (e.g. modality, aspect, evidentiality, verbal quantification), frustrativity spans over several layers of semantic organization. In taking such an approach, the project aligns with recent work in layered models of clause structure (Functional Discourse Grammar, Role and Reference Grammar, Syntactic Cartography) and aims at furthering our understanding of the hierarchical organization of linguistic categories.
