Do you have a degree from another UvA faculty or Dutch University? On this page, you will find the entry requirements for the Master's Economics. We aim to offer an interactive programme, for that reason we apply a selection procedure. We assess your application based on both the entry requirements and additional selection criteria.

Entry requirements

We will evaluate your application based on your academic background.

  • UvA students from another faculty

You have direct admission to our Master's in Economics without any further conditions such as a minimum GPA, if you have:

  • Students from another Dutch university

For this Master’s programme, you can apply if you are holding the following degree from a Research University:

    • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Economics or Econometrics.
    • A Bachelor's or Master's programme with Economics as a major subject.
    • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Statistics and Physics.
    • A pre-Master's programme from a Dutch Research University.

In addition to the above, you must have proven knowledge in all the following topics at intermediate level in:

    • Microeconomics
    • Macroeconomics
    • Mathematics and Statistics

If your previous education does not fulfil this programme’s requirements, you might be eligible to apply for the pre-Master's programme Economics.

Selection

Meeting the entry requirements is just the first step. Besides the entry requirements, you need to meet the selection criteria. This means that your application will be compared with other applicants. The selection is based on your GPA and motivation letter.

  • 1. Your Grade Point Average (GPA)

We are looking for students who have shown academic potential to keep up with the high level and workload of the programme. Therefore, one of the criteria on which your application will be assessed is the Grade Point Average (GPA). You need a minimum GPA of 7.0 (rounded). We especially value strong grades in:

    • Microeconomics
    • Macroeconomics
    • Econometrics or quantitative research methods

If your GPA is lower than 7.0, we will still take your application into account, but you will need excellent grades on the above-mentioned mentioned courses.

    How to calculate your GPA

Your GPA should be calculated over:

    • all Bachelor's degree results (year 1-3). Any additional Bachelor’s courses have to be included as well.
    • your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree that is most relevant to the entry requirements. If you have both, you need a GPA of at least 7.0 in either your Bachelor’s or your Master’s.
  • 2. Your motivation letter

The motivation letter (max. one A4)  allows you to explain why you would be a good fit for the Master’s programme and which experiences have led you to this decision.
