Each language offers a unique framework to express gender. As the strive for gender inclusivity reshapes societies, linguistic communities rethink how to reflect these changes in their languages, also raising questions concerning learnability. Our research group explores gender in language through multiple lenses, bridging theory and practice for inclusive communication.

Key objectives (scientific and impact)

  • Unite scholars working on gender from UvA and other universities.
  • Provide room for discussion of research ideas, methodologies, and preliminary results.
  • Invite scholars to give talks on relevant topics.
  • Share research findings with the broader public, for instance, language teachers.
  • Organise a conference on language and gender (potentially targeting the learnability perspective), followed by an edited volume.

Events

We plan to organise a group meeting every three weeks, alternating between invited talks,  discussion of research ideas and preliminary results, or discussion of research papers. All meetings will take place online. We also plan to propose an ACLC-lecture once a year.

Impact

  • Investigate the impact of societal changes on language from a crosslinguistic perspective, taking into account different approaches: educational, theoretical, but also socio- and psycholinguistics.
  • Spread knowledge to a broader public through a blog where scholars giving a presentation can publicize and popularise their work to a broader audience.
