SignLab Amsterdam is a cross-faculty research lab at the University of Amsterdam. It brings together a long tradition of sign language linguistics in Amsterdam with recent advances in artificial intelligence.

Key objectives 

  • Investigate the structure of signs and signed sentences, paying special attention to cross-modal and intra-modal variation and similarities;
  • Develop new methods making use of computer vision and machine learning techniques to investigate sign language structure;
  • Contribute to diminishing the communication barrier between deaf and hearing people by integrating novel insights into the grammar of sign languages in new sign language applications and technology.

Impact

SignLab Amsterdam aims to contribute to diminishing the communication barrier between deaf and hearing people by gaining deeper insight into the grammar of sign languages and integrating this knowledge in newly developed sign language applications and technology.

Events
