SMART (Speech & Language, Music, Art, Reasoning and Thought) is organizing a workshop on awareness in humans and machines. This Workshop is organized in the context of the 2019 SMART Workshops.

Detail Summary
Date 14 June 2019

Awareness is often seen as the epitome of what it means to be human. SMART CS organizes a symposium on awareness in humans and machines that explores how far the boundaries of awareness can be stretched, by considering what role awareness plays in human cognition, machine learning and human-machine interaction. The symposium is on 14 June 2019 from 13 to 17 in the VOC-zaal. Details about the afternoon can be found here.

Speakers are:

  • Axel Cleeremans (Université Libre de Bruxelles): Consciousness (unconsciously) designs itself
  • Joost Broekens (Delft University of Technology): Emotions and Explanations in Artificial Intelligence
  • Chiara de Jong (University of Amsterdam): Children’s acceptance of social robots
  • Eelke Spaak (Donders Institute): The contents of consciousness in predictive brains
  • Padraic Monaghan (University of Amsterdam): Awareness of structure during language acquisition: Testing distinctions between explicit and implicit knowledge
