PhD Skills programme

Workshop in the PhD Skills programme: You will be trained in translating your research topics into concrete applications that can benefit society. Successful societal impact comes from identifying societal issues in which academic research can contribute to (a part of) the solution.

The challenge often is to find issues that are both urgent enough, and still close enough to your academic expertise. Another challenge is  to communicate this in such a way that people outside academia will become enthusiastic. This course will cover these two important challenges and thus help you find ways of creating societal value with your own research topic.

The course will offer a varied program where the morning is focused on defining relevant societal issues and the way your research can contribute to a solution. While in the afternoon, you will focus on communicating this. Both the morning and the afternoon will follow the same outline which is:

  • Lecture from the trainers
  • Work on individual assignment
  • Practice and help each other

We will actively search for ideas you can pursue, based on your own research. Throughout the day you will receive ideas, feedback and inspiration from both the trainers as from your peers in the workshop. By the end of the day you will have a clear idea about ways of creating societal value with your own research topic. This can be used for your knowledge utilization paragraph for future grant applications (like a Veni proposal), but also to have a much clearer vision on who you want to reach out to in order to have more societal impact.

To help you as much as we can, we invite people from within the UvA that can help you to implement your ideas after the workshop. These people will join the final hour of the afternoon to help you with suggestions on how to take the next step!
