Language and Hearing: sentence processing in listeners with hearing impairment.

Abstract

This talk will be about sentence processing and comprehension in adverse listening conditions with a focus on (older) listeners with hearing impairment and sentence processing in noise. Sentence processing is affected by adverse listening conditions, such as hearing impairment or noise. Specifically, there seems to be an interaction between hearing and sentence processing, in the sense that more complex sentence processing is affected more in noise and more in hearing impaired listeners. I will present studies on the comprehension and processing of movement-derived sentences, such as passives, wh-questions and topicalized sentences, and address the role of working memory. Finally, I will discuss the effect of hearing aid use in listeners with hearing impairment on sentence processing with data from a neuroimaging study.
