CURRICULUM VITAE Manfred Woidich was born on October 26th, 1943, in Karlsbad, Czechia. In 1945 he moved to Bavaria where he followed the normal governmental schools. Between 1962 and 1969 he studied Semitic Languages, Assyriology and Turkology at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (Germany) with a break in 1966-67 for studying Arabic in Egypt and teaching German language at the Goethe Institute. He obtained his PhD from Munich in 1969 with a thesis on negation in Egyptian Arabic. In the same year he left for Egypt again and worked there until 1972 as a director of the Aswan branch of the Goethe Institute in Egypt, at the same time doing field work on Arabic dialects in Upper Egypt. From 1972 till 1974 he taught Arabic (Modern Standard and Egyptian Colloquial) at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics of the University of Mainz in Germersheim. In 1974 he joined the Goethe Institute again, and was sent to Cairo in 1976 where he stayed until 1983 when he was appointed Full Professor at the University of Amsterdam. In 2008 he retired and is now Professor emeritus, living in Nördlingen/Bavaria. In 2010, he cooperated with Jonathan Owens (Bayreuth University) in the preparation of a project "Idiomaticity, lexical realignment, and semantic change in spoken Arabic" which was granted in 2011 by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft ( http://www.dfg.de/gepris).

Research

Manfred Woidich's research is in the field of dialectology, dialect geography, historical linguistics of the Arabic language. His publications concern in particular phonological, morphological and syntactic issues in Egyptian dialects, with all their diachronic and synchronic aspects. Another field of interest and activity is "Teaching Arabic as a second language". He is a committed supporter of the "colloquial first" approach and co-authored with Rabha Heinen-Nasr textbooks on Egyptian and Modern Standard Arabic. Current projects further involve the "Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte", an atlas containing fully coloured onomasiological maps describing the terms used for more than 500 items all over the Arab world.
