In February 2018 I started working as a PhD within Project MIND (Multilingualism in Day care/Meertaligheid in Dagopvang). This project investigates the impact of multilingual day cares (Dutch-English) on the acquisition of the first language (Dutch) and the second (English). The participating daycare centers and their children will be followed for several years.
For this project, I study the acquisition and development of the Dutch language. What does bilingual daycare (Dutch-English) mean for the development of the Dutch language? Are particular aspects of Dutch subject to crosslinguistic influence? And what effect does bilingual daycare have on children acquiring Dutch as their first, second or even third language? By assessing standardized language tests as well as analyzing the nature of Dutch input offered at multilingual daycares my aim is to gain more insight into the process of acquiring multiple languages at a very young age, and the influence of second language acquisition on the first.
