Many UvA information systems that require access via the internet will feature two-step verification using Tiqr. Please make sure to activate the Tiqr app in time. Find out how to activate Tiqr on this page.

Why is two-step verification necessary?

A large number of security breaches are the result of the misuse of passwords. The Tiqr app essentially adds another lock to the door. For accessing Microsoft 365 apps, the Microsoft Authenticator app will still apply.

Register and activate the Tiqr-app
  • Step 1. Request a Tiqr activation code
    1. Download the Tiqr app on your mobile phone from the App Store or Google Play Store.
    2. Go to the SURFconext registration portal and select ‘Add Token’ > ‘Tiqr’.
When you don't see an option to add a token, but you do see a 'Remove', you already have a (Tiqr) token. Is it no longer working properly or do you have a new phone? Then remove your current token first. You don't have any login problems with your current token? Then you don't need to take any further steps.
    3. You will now see a QR code. Scan it with the Tiqr app (on your mobile phone) and select ‘OK’.
    4. Enter a PIN and memorise it (or choose facial recognition or fingerprint verification). Please note that you will not be able to change the PIN code at a later stage!
    5. You will receive a confirmation email with a link. Your activation code will be shown on the screen when you click on the link, but it will also be emailed to you.
    6. Keep the activation code safe and take it to a service desk to get your Tiqr app activated.
  • Step 2. Activate your Tiqr app at a service point or service desk

If you received an activation code by email, please go to one of the library desks below during office hours to activate your Tiqr app.

Please bring your activation code, your mobile and a valid proof of identity

To activate the Tiqr app, the desk clerk must be able to verify your identity. You will need your mobile phone and valid proof of identity (such as a passport, ID card or driving licence), so please make sure you have these documents to hand. Without the code, your mobile and your ID, the clerk will not be able to activate Tiqr for you.

Unable to visit a desk in person?

If you are physically unable to visit a desk or service point, you will be able to phone the ICTS Service Desk to activate your Tiqr app. During the call, you will be invited to take part in a Microsoft Teams meeting or someone will supervise the process via remote access using Splashtop.

Visit one of these desks:

  • Desk library P.C. Hoofthuis
  • Desk Library Learning Center Roeterseiland desk (REC-H)
  • Desk Science Park Library
  • Desk University Library Singel
  • WPO Hogehilweg

Opening hours and addresses can be found on the contact page of the library

New mobile phone

If you have a new mobile phone, you will need to reinstall and activate the Tiqr app using the steps above to log in with two-step verification. First, make sure you delete the Tiqr app still registered on your old phone through the SURFconext registration portal. Under 'Overview tokens' you will find the Tiqr app you activated (also called 'token') on your old phone. Click the 'Delete' button behind the Tiqr app registered on your old mobile phone.

Logging in with two-step verification through the Tiqr app

Once your Tiqr app is activated, log in to the UvA information systems as follows:

  1. Open an application that requires two-step verification via Tiqr, such as the Self-service Tool.
  2. Log in with your UvAnetID and corresponding password.
  3. Log in with an additional code, such as a QR code to be scanned via the Tiqr app on your mobile phone. You may also be asked for a letter or number code.
