A. Francisca Snoeck Henkemans, Associate Professor in the Department of Speech Communication, Argumentation Theory and Rhetoric of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Amsterdam, coordinates the Research Master Rhetoric, Argumentation Theory and Philosophy.

In 1992, she defended her PhD thesis Analysing Complex Argumentation, in which a dialogical model is developed of how various argumentation structures may come into being in a discussion. Snoeck Henkemans is a specialist in the field of linguistic characteristics of argumentation. In 2007 she published a monograph on argumentative indicators in discourse, together with Frans van Eemeren and Peter Houtlosser. At present her research focuses on the role of stylistic devices such as tropes and figures in arguers' strategic manoeuverings, that is in their attempt to balance their dialectical with their rhetorical aims. Another research topic of Snoeck Henkemans is the study of argumentation in the medical domain.

Snoeck Henkemans is a member of the editorial board of Informal Logic, and of the Dutch Journal of Speech Communication (Tijdschrift voor Taalbeheersing). She is a regular referee for the journals Argumentation and Argumentation in Context.
